Three teacher unions have declared an indefinite nationwide strike action over what they described as legacy of arrears spanning from 2012 to 2016.
The teacher unions namely; Ghana National Association of Teachers, (GNAT), National Association Of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT) say the indefinite strike action is effective Monday 9th December, 2019.
The teacher unions at a press briefing on Thursday said their action is to protest their arrears which spanned from the 2012 to 2016.
The Volta regional chairman of Collation of Concern Teachers (CCT) Mr Takyi Solomon told Kaakyire Kwasi Afari on Time FM news that, both the previous and current government has failed to negotiates with the teacher Unions in addressing their Legacy arrears.
Mr Takyi Solomon stated the payments has delayed because GES claimed it has detected some difficulties which he describes as human errors.
According to the regional chairman, their last meeting with Ghana education service, they were informed and outlined the following challenges of the exercise.
“Some teachers were paid on ranks they were not on, some teachers had no personal records on the pay roll between 2012 to 2014, some teachers were not owed any arrears, yet were credited with huge amount of money, some teachers were employed as pupils teachers but were paid as senior superintendents, some female teachers were paid as night watchmen”
Mr Takyi said, nothing could force the three teacher unions to resume from their indefinite strike unless the education ministry clears all the arrears due them.
