MAKE OUR LANGUAGE EXAMINABLE – NUMEROUS KONKOMBA PUPILS TO GES AS THEY STRUGGLE TO WRITE GHANAIAN LANGUAGE PAPER

Ghanaian language and culture is one of the Eight (8) subjects written in the Basic Education Certificate Examination in Ghana but out of the 49 7ylanguages spoken in Ghana, only nine (9) are studied and written. Most of the Konkomba pupils writing 2019 BECE had no option than to register for the languages which are not their mother tongues.

In Bimbilla,Konkomba students who speak Likpakpaanl Languages make a significant number in schools within and outside Bimbilla township but cannot get opportunity to write their own mother tongue ,Likpakpaanl.

Students from schools dominated by Konkomba made up to apporximately 98-99% Konkomba students are compelled to write the Dagbani language they can not speak and understand.

Some of the schools in Nanumba North such as Bakpaba JHS,Chamba D/A JHS,St.Francis JHS,Taali JHS,Juanayili JHS,Nakpa JHS,Dipah JHS,St.Mary’s JHS (Sogon No.2),St.Francis JHS(Gungumpaab),ukanljabondo JHS,Dakpam JHS,Sabonjida JHS,Binchera Tanga JHS,Dakpam JHS,Chamba JHS B,St.Michael’s JHS (Makayili),Lepusi JHS etc are dominated by Konkomba Students write Dagbani.

Those students therefore answer and or write like illiterates since they can not read and understand the questions not to talk of answering them. Konkomba according to the 2010 Population and Housing Census were second largest ethnic group in Ghana and eighth (8) largest spoken Language in the northern Region and Ghana respectively.
in the Northern Region there are numerous Konkomba students occupying most of the basic and second cycle institutions but cannot write their language because of the limitation placed on those languages by the Ghana Education Service and for that matter the government of Ghana.

It is important to note that ,Konkomba currently dominate in districts such as Nanumba North and South,Sangule- Tatale,Saboba,Mion, Yunyoo-Nasuan and Cheriponi. They also have significant numbers in other districts such as Yendi,Zabzugu,Bunkpurugu,East Mamprusi in the North East Region.

They also dominate and form approximately 98%in the following Districts in Oti Region Nkwanta North,Karachi Nchumuru, and
Significant in Nkwanta south,Karachi East etc Konkomba are Also  Kintampo,Atebubu,Amantin,Ejura,Prang.
Greater Accra,Eastern Region and in Ashanti Region.

In Bimbilla, the students who interacted with Christopher Agbodo Ranson from modernafricaonline.com said they do not know what to write ,others were of the view that, they should be allowed to get people who can translate Dagbani to them in the examination hall but unfortunately the West African Examination Council (WAEC) prohibits that.

The students therefore call on the government of Ghana,The Ghana Education Service to make Likpakpaanl Language an examinable one to give them the opportunity to express themselves in their mother tongue and learn their fading Culture.

One of the students however said GES and the government of Ghana were depriving them the privilege to write in their mother tongue,he said if their counter parts whose mother tongues were writing should pass more than them in those subjects, they would be placed in better senior high schools while they would be placed in low performing senior high schools popularly called “mushroom schools”

Reacting to the plight of the students,A concerned Konkomba Abraham Njonaan Nlenkiba calls on the government and the Ghana Education service to give all languages spoken in Ghana anf who have written languages opportunity to study and learn their respective languages in Schools. He noted that most of the Konkomba dominated schools, there are no teachers to teach even the Dagbani they offer or there may be teachers but they do not teach at all.

In a related development, Konkomba students studying in Colleges of education have complained bitterly on how they are forced to study and write languages they do not understand.some of the students in EP College of education in Bimbilla, said they have been affected and some traild in the Ghanaian Languages and had to resit it one to three times before they pass because in the College of Education it is Compulsory to either study Dagbani,Gonja ,or Twi which some of them can not understand and speak as well as to write.
