John Essien Advises student journalists to protect the image of KNUST

A broadcast journalist with KNUST’s Focus FM, John Essien has urged budding student journalists to protect the image of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology through their reportage.

“You cannot put the name of your own university in the news for the bad reasons,’’ he said.

According to him, it is important for every student journalist to recognize their roles as junior members of the premier science and Technology University in Africa-hence the need to paint a good image of the institution.

John Essien, who is also the news editor at Focus FM made the call during the Meet the press event organized by the Electoral Commission of the KNUST SRC.

While advising journalists to avoid sensational reportage, he said the jurisdiction of campus media under the university’s law is a little bit biased towards the institution.

“I know in discharging your duties you will definitely encounter challenges and frustrations, but that is no excuse to be sensational. Do not use your power to settle scores, do not use campus journalism and the media to worship yourselves,” he stressed.

He, therefore, urged journalists to be professional, responsible and commit their resources and time to deliver reports that would shape the university’s development agenda and ensure peaceful coexistence. between management and students.
