Amnesty International issues alert to travelers visiting U.S.

Amnesty International has issued a travel warning calling for travelers and visitors to the United States of America (USA) to exercise caution and have a contingency plan when traveling throughout that country due to ongoing rampant gun violence in the United States.

Travelers have been advised to be extra vigilant at all times and be wary of the ubiquity of firearms among the population, avoid places where large numbers of people gather especially cultural events, places of worship, schools and shopping malls and exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, night clubs, and casinos.

The alert said: “Depending on the traveler’s gender identity, race, country of origin, ethnic background or sexual orientation, they may be at higher risk of being targeted with gun violence, and should plan accordingly.”

This comes on the back of a mass shooting that occurred at a Walmart store in El Paso, Texas, United States, on the morning of 3 August 2019.

A lone gunman killed 22 people and injured 24 others. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting as an act of domestic terrorism and a possible hate crime.
