Nigerian Police Disperse Shiite Protesters In Abuja

The Nigeria Police on Friday afternoon disrupted a  procession of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria,IMN,  around Bannex Plaza, Wuse in Abuja.
According to eyewitnesses, policemen fired tear gas canisters and gunshots in the air forcing  Shi’ites and passers-by to run for safety thereby dispersing the procession.
The IMN members who came out in large numbers were protesting the continued detention of their leader and his wife  Sheik Ibraheem El Zakzaki and Zeenat Zakzaki  both of them have been in detention since 2015 following skirmishes between the supporters of the Sheik and men of the Nigerian Army.
In a related move, the IMN members are planning to hold their annual Arbaeen trek on Saturday.
The trek is held in commemoration of the murder of Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad.
According to political and security analysts, trek may well turn out to be another bloody  clash between the Shiites and the men of the Nigerian agencies as were the cases in the past .
