The Chief of Kokrobitey in the Greater Accra region, Nii Ofei has urged voters to vote YES in the December 17, 2019, national referendum to enable political parties to directly involve in the local government elections
Speaking to the press, Nii Ofei said allowing political parties to directly involve in the election of MMDCEs by embracing the amendment to the constitution will bolster Ghana’s democracy.
He hinted that a lot of the MMDCEs do not recognize the power of the Chiefs and the importance of chieftaincy at the local level therefore voting on MMDCEs will make them respect the Chiefs.
“We do not have say in what they do because we are not the ones who appointed them; some even do not respect the chiefs because they think they do not owe us any allegiance as far as his position is concerned”, he said
He was of the view that A YES vote will strengthen our multi-party democracy consistent with our constitution, A YES vote will strengthen our system of decentralization by proving a coordinated and an organized political system, and A YES vote will provide a greater opportunity for citizens of voting age to participate in political activities intended to influence policies at the local government level.
The referendum is to decide on a possible amendment of Article 55 (3) 1992 constitution to enable political parties to sponsor candidates for local level elections.
