Misgivings as Benue guber appeal holds in Abuja

Anxiety and tension have enveloped both supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue state, as Appeal Court decides on the governorship appeal petition in Abuja.
The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, the state capital, had on 7th October, delivered judgement in favour of Governor Samuel Ortom, the candidate of the PDP.
But the APC candidate, Barr. Emmanuel Jime disagreed with the judgement, urging the appellant court to set aside the decision of the tribunal.
Counsels to Governor Ortom had on Tuesday, 19th November, received a notice of hearing from the Court of Appeal, Makurdi division, informing them that the court would hear the appeal in Makurdi on Thursday, 21st November.
Controversially, the Court of Appeal, Abuja division also sent a notice of appeal, same day, informing the legal team of the governor and the PDP to proceed to Abuja, for a hearing slated for Thursday, 21st November.
But the PDP kicked against the development, saying it was going to reject the plot to relocate the venue for the appeal, adding that the earlier notice should stand.
A statement issued Tuesday night by the state publicity secretary of the party, Bemgba Iortyom, read in part, “Anything short of this is an attempt at subverting the course of justice and will be lawfully resisted by PDP as the sponsoring platform and custodian of the hard-won victory of Governor Samuel Ortom at the 2019 Governorship Election in Benue State”.
At at the time of filing this report (12:51pm), the 5-man panel just arrived courtroom for the commencement of hearing in Abuja.
